A MESSAGE FOR THE SAN MATEO COUNTY HEALTH SYSTEM

There has been an increase in the number of cases of pertussis (commonly referred to as “Whooping Cough”) in San Mateo County and throughout the U.S. this year. Pertussis is an infection of the respiratory tract that usually lasts 6-10 weeks.

Symptoms begin with a runny nose, sneezing, possibly a low-grade fever, and mild cough. After a week or two, a persistent cough develops, which may occur in explosive bursts (paroxysmal coughing), sometimes ending in a high-pitched whoop and vomiting.

Older children and adults may have a less typical cough. Although the disease is less severe in adults and older children, they can unknowingly infect infants and preschoolers who are at risk for serious illness. CLICK BELOW TO READ MORE.

MOBILE HEALTH VAN SCHEDULE

With seasonal flu season coming soon, it is important that all San Mateo County residents know how to prevent the spread of influenza (or flu). School-age children often transmit influenza to each other as they play and study together, and they also pass the flu on to adults and siblings in school and at home. Protect yourself, protect others. Everyone six months old and older should get vaccinated. No appointment required. No I.D. necessary. For more information, visit www.smhealth.org/flu, or call 650-573-3927.

P.E. AND HALL LOCKER NOTICE

Students have reported that personal items have been stolen from their locked PE and hall lockers. Although some of these thefts may be due to carelessness, the likelihood of the lockers being compromised by someone in possession of an unauthorized key is a possibility. With this in mind, we are recommending the following actions to alleviate this situation:

1) Students leave all valuables that are not school related at home.

2) Students may bring additional locks for their hall and PE lockers.

Any student who is found breaking into lockers or in possession of stolen property will face disciplinary action at school and the Pacifica Police Department will be notified.

Students are responsible for maintaining the interior cleanliness of their lockers. A $50 cleaning fee will be charged to students whose lockers are defaced with stickers or graffiti.
